Responding to a National Disaster

Traffic Control Projects, August 14, 2020
AWP manages traffic control to help restore power following catastrophic storm damage

Emergency response is a traffic control service AWP provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Weather is unpredictable, but AWP is reliable. We were ready to support our communities in Indiana when they incurred major storm damage.

Challenge

Three tornadoes touched down in the greater Kokomo area, causing structural damage and leaving several people injured. More than 29,000 power outages were caused by the storm. With a temporary state of emergency declared, all roads needed to be closed except for emergency responders, government officials and other public workers.

Solution

Over the next 94 hours, AWP worked around-the-clock with local energy providers and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to restore power. The first round of traffic control was organized overnight to begin work early on the morning following the storm.

  • 76 AWP trucks deployed
  • 183 AWP team members worked in 16-hour shifts for complete 24/7 work zone coverage
  • Crews from three AWP locations within an hour of Kokomo responded

Results

Power was restored to all impacted homes and businesses within four days. By utilizing crews from multiple AWP facilities, we covered Kokomo’s emergency response needs and were still able to serve other Indiana-based customers with staff who remained at each local facility.
