AWP Safety Community Giving: ALS Society

Team AWP, August 9, 2023

At AWP Safety, we support charitable programs and initiatives that improve safety, quality of life, equity and self-sufficiency in the communities we serve through our Community Giving Program. After being nominated by of one of our Safety First Area Managers, Lisa Caissie, AWP Safety selected and presented a check to the ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to help support their impactful role in their local community.

The ALS Society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia was an important charity for Lisa, as she witnessed their impact first hand. Lisa lost her father, Mitch, to ALS in 2014. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a nervous system disease that weakens your muscles and decreases your physical performance. Once his ALS progressed, Mitch needed to resort to using a wheelchair full-time. This life-changing event was difficult, but with the help of the ALS Society’s equipment loan program, Mitch was provided with everything he needed, from an elevator to help him navigate around his house, to a van equipped to transport his electric wheelchair.

The ALS Society aims to provide services and equipment to others like Mitch – servicing as many people living in the region as they can. The organization has distributed over 2,800 pieces of equipment to people living with ALS in Canada. AWP Safety’s donation will be used to extend the organization’s reach and provide critical items such as wheelchairs and track systems to those struggling with the disease.

AWP Safety team members are driven to strengthen our local communities through charitable giving, volunteering, and servicing as community leaders. If you are an AWP Employee and have an organization that you would like to nominate to be considered for AWP Safety’s Community Giving Program, you can learn more and complete the form on our Community Giving page.
