It’s a Hole in One for AWP at the PGA Championship Tournaments

Traffic Control Projects, June 13, 2019

Golfers and fans met at The PGA Bethpage Black Championship of 2019 during May 13th – 19th and the Senior PGA Tournament during May 23rd – 26th. Being the nation’s largest golf tournaments, hundreds of thousands of people flooded the two courses throughout the tournament weeks. While golf fanatics were eagerly anticipating the events, AWP was behind the scenes planning for the events.

Coordinating Equipment

The PGA Championship Events are not new to AWP. We have provided traffic control solutions for this annual event (including the senior PGA) multiple times. According to Todd Crider, AWP’s Event Services Manager, the first step to providing a safe, successful event was gathering and coordinating the necessary equipment required for this job. Todd stated that “AWP is the only company that has the capacity to coordinate traffic control personnel and equipment for such a complex, big event.”

Ensuring Safety and Compliance

Once we gathered all the signs, our second step consisted of working closely with a New York Engineering Firm and NYDOT to ensure that we obtained all necessary permits and remained compliant throughout the span of the job. Working with these departments daily, Bethpage Facility Manager, Paul Myers, was happy to report that “everything came together perfectly.”

Setting up the zones

After we acquired all the necessary signs and permits, AWP began to measure and observe traffic flow. Being in Bethpage, NY, AWP had to set up equipment all the way out to Jones Island. “It took our crew 4 whole days to set up our equipment,” said Paul Myers. “This was a huge job.” AWP worked closely with NYDOT to maneuver around construction sites, additional events, and school zones, so AWP signs were clear and visible to instruct people where to go. Once all signs were put into place, AWP deployed a crew everyday throughout the week. The crew’s sole task was to fix and maintain all signs that were damaged or misplaced. During these events, AWP provided 24/7 service, and at the end of the day, it was “a lot of good teamwork to get the job done.” (Myers.)

AWP enjoyed working on the PGA Championship events, and we were pleased to provide service that satisfied our customer’s needs. Evan Crowder, Championship Coordinator for 2019 Bethpage Championship, stated:

AWP was easy to work with. They provided a timely, fast and reliable install. Any concerns we had were addressed within the hour. Additionally, they were able to get us the equipment we needed in a short amount of time!

Despite the magnitude of equipment, regulations, and constant monitoring, AWP provided a smooth process of providing signage with clear communication which led to a seamless traffic flow.

No matter how big or small the event is, AWP ensures a safe and efficient experience. Request a quote for your next event!
