
Comprehensive Signage and Traffic Control Solutions for Major San Jose Caltrans Project
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), which manages over 50,000 miles of highway across California, sought a reliable partner to replace traffic signs along a 10-mile stretch encompassing highways 101, 87, and 85 in San Jose — Northern California’s largest and most traffic-congested city. With more than two decades of experience working with Caltrans, AWP Safety secured the project thanks to its proven track record, in-house sign manufacturing capabilities and next-generation safety technologies.
Challenge
California’s highways are infamous for heavy traffic at all hours, and the added presence of high-speed drivers creates a hazardous environment for roadway projects that require lane or ramp closures. In this case, the urgency of replacing damaged and outdated traffic signs meant Caltrans needed a partner capable of completing the work quickly, without compromising safety.
Beyond the time-sensitive nature of the job, the massive overhead signs required specific hardware and certified installation to meet state standards. Complicating matters further, the existing signage had long been a target of vandalism, especially graffiti. Caltrans was interested in ways to deter vandalism of the new signs.
Solution
AWP Safety responded with a comprehensive approach that prioritized safety, efficiency and innovation.
- Custom in-house sign manufacturing. All signage was fabricated in-house by AWP Safety’s certified team, ensuring compliance and warranty coverage. The signs feature reflective coatings that respond to vehicle headlights, removing the need for additional lighting infrastructure.
- Smart Signage Technology. In collaboration with Caltrans, AWP Safety piloted motion sensor technology in the signage — the first of its kind in California. These sensors detect movement around the signs and alert authorities in real time to help deter vandalism. Caltrans is using the technology to test its success rate and viability for broader deployment across the state.
- Enhanced worksite protection. Eleven crew members were deployed to manage lane closures and the actual sign installation across two freeways simultaneously. To mitigate the dangers posed by high-speed traffic, AWP Safety extended all lane closures and deployed three crash trucks, more than the usual standard for similar worksites. The team also coordinated with local law enforcement to station police cruisers near the active worksites, further improving visibility and safety.

- Revolutionary Signage Technology. The integration of motion sensors marks the first time this vandalism-prevention technology is being used to help protect overhead highway signs.
- Strengthened Partnership. The successful and timely delivery of this project has positioned AWP Safety as a front-runner for future planned Caltrans sign replacement projects.
